Lecture 3: Isaac Sasportas was a Haitian-born Sephardic Jew. Inspired by the French Revolution¹s embrace of religious and racial equality, he conceived an elaborate plan in 1799 to export the Haitian Revolution to nearby Jamaica and to free Britain¹s slaves‹the closest that the New World ever got to a second Haiti. His ultimate failure reveals why the Haitian Revolution remained a one-off event.
