Instituto Cervantes: Language Variation in Spanish and the Heritage Learner

In this workshop, Prof. Martinez will provide the teacher of Spanish for heritage learners with an overview of the theoretical struggles surrounding the value of the different language varieties that are used, privileged, or even ridiculed in the Spanish for heritage learners classroom. We will consider various approaches to the question from the beginnings of heritage language pedagogy up until the present. These approaches, moreover, will be contextualized within the social and linguistic theoretical frameworks of their day. After this theoretical overview, we will turn our attention to some practical facets of language variation in the heritage language classroom. More specifically, we will consider the following questions: Which varieties and registers are appropriate for teaching in the classroom? How are these varieties and registers best taught? The workshop will conclude with a collaborative curriculum development activity. Participants will work in small groups to design, develop and present a learning activity designed to enhance awareness of language variation among heritage learners of Spanish.

En este taller, el prof. Martínez ofrecerá a los profesores de español como lengua de herencia una visión general de los conflictos en torno a las variedades lingüísticas privilegiadas o incluso ridiculizadas dentro del aula. Se tendrán en cuenta diversos enfoques teóricos, contextualizados dentro de unos marcos sociales y lingüísticos. Después de la revisión teórica, se prestará atención a algunos aspectos prácticos en relación con la variación lingüística en el aula de español. Se proponen preguntas como las siguientes: ¿Qué variedades y registros son más apropiados para la enseñanza en el aula? ¿Cómo han de enseñarse estas variedades y registros? El taller concluirá con una actividad de desarrollo curricular colaborativo. Los participantes trabajarán en pequeños grupos para diseñar, desarrollar y presentar una actividad de aprendizaje para mejorar el conocimiento de la variación lingüística en español entre los estudiantes de herencia.
