My teaching and research interests revolve around the history of the Russian empire from the 17th century to 1917. I am particularly interested in the methods and meaning of imperial rule in the non-Russian borderlands in the late 18th/early 19th centuries. My current project examines social and cultural aspects of the integration of the Crimean khanate into the empire, and I have begun work on the development of the wine industry in Russia's southern provinces. Other interests include the Enlightenment in Russia, the politics of architectural space, and Russian-Ottoman encounters in the Black Sea region.
