 James Ferguson is the Susan S. and William H. Hindle Professor in the School of Humanities and Sciences, and Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Stanford University. His research has focused on southern Africa (especially Lesotho, Zambia, South Africa, and Namibia), and has engaged a broad range of theoretical and ethnographic issues. He will present *Proletarian Politics Today: From Historical Analogy to Distributive Politics.*

 A week in advance, the presenter’s paper will be circulated through the [Harvard African Studies Workshop listserv](https://lists.fas.harvard.edu/mailman/listinfo/africanstudiesworkshop-list). It is assumed that everyone has read the paper before the workshop. After presentation and commentary, Workshop attendees are invited to engage in critique and discussion, under the moderation of the Workshop Chairs.
