**“Subterfuge and Deception in the Pre-Modern Mediterranean”**  
a workshop consisting of three pre-circulated papers with comment by the audience:  
• Argyro Nicolaou (Comparative Literature, Harvard University): *Narratives of Deception and the Pre-Modern Mediterranean Imaginary*  
• Fred Astern (Jewish Studies, San Francisco State University): *The Gibeonite Gambit: Harranians, Karaites, and Khaybari Jews on the Margins of Medieval Islamic Society*  
• Karen Pinto (History, Boise State): *Masking Conflict with Harmony: The Two Faces of the KMMS Mediterranean Map*  
and our featured scholar:  
• Thomas F. Glick (History, Boston University): *Deception and Subterfuge: A Medieval Miller in Court*
