Mecca: The Lived City

The Center for Middle Eastern Studies is pleased to present "Mecca: The Lived City", a symposium examining the ways in which the city of Mecca is imagined, remembered, represented, and visualized from the perspectives of history, literature, urban planning, and the visual arts.

The symposium begins Thursday, May 2, at 5pm, with a keynote talk by Rosie Bsheer, Assistant Professor of History, Harvard University.

The panels on day two (May 3), will run from 8:45 am - 5:00 pm, and will features the following talks:

  • Ali Almajnooni (SUNY Binghamton): The Meccan Alley: The Decline of Vernacular Architecture
  • Jawaher Al Sudairy (Dar Al-Uloum Initiative): Conceptions and Realities of Makkah's Urban Future
  • Hussam Dakkak (Studio Bound, London): Makkah's Belonging
  • Tyler Kynn (Yale University): Between Empire and Sacred Space: Mecca as a Global Space in the Early Modern World
  • Omer Shah (Columbia University): "Made in Makkah”: Smart Technology and Human Resources in the Holy City
  • Drew Wensley (Moriyama & Teshima Planners, Toronto): Mecca: City of Offering/City of Need
