Lecture by Kris Manjapra RI '16

While at the Institute, Manjapra is working on his next book project: a global study of the plantation complex from its modern inception in the Americas in the 17th century to its apotheosis in the Indian Ocean during the 19th and 20th centuries. The work is an intellectual history of how a new way of incorporating land, labor, law, and capital in the Global South came to define the rise of industrial agriculture, global patterns of migration and diaspora, and the modern world order. During the fellowship year, Manjapra will focus on the plantation linkages between the Caribbean and South Asia in terms of the circulation of laborers, crops, and managers between these world regions.
