*Winner of a Pulitzer Prize, a National Book Award, and a MacArthur Fellowship*  
*Carol K. Pforzheimer Professor at the Radcliffe Institute,*   
*Charles Warren Professor of American Legal History at Harvard Law School, and*   
*professor of history at Harvard University*Monticello was the home of Thomas Jefferson and over the years, hundreds of enslaved African Americans. What does this place tell us about the American past, and what does it suggest about our capacity to go forward as a multiracial society premised on the notions of equality raised in Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence?
