"The Italian presence in Machado de Assis’s Dom Casmurro: adaptations, translations and filigrees"

The lecture will demonstrate recurrent Italian themes ranging from opera as a structure and a motif, namely Verdi’s Othello, to the suggestions in the name of the main female character, Capitolina, and references to Roman history. All of this is an expression of Machado’s confrontation with the western and in this case the Italian canon based on adaptations, translations, and rejections in a fabric of filigrees.
