 **'To Leave or Stay?' History, Politics, and Existential Choice in the Films of István Szabó**

 István Szabó, the first Hungarian director to win an Academy Award for best foreign film (Mephisto, 1981), remains one of Hungary’s leading filmmakers. Susan Suleiman will discuss a recurring theme in his films: the question of individual choice in lives that are determined by events beyond the individual’s control.
