The interregional arena of the Indian Ocean has emerged as a connected—if not unified—field of historical study. Past projects have explored and explained webs of relationships that bound together the peoples of South Asia, Middle East, East and South Africa, and Southeast and East Asia. Sugata Bose and Sunil Amrith now bring together the best historians of the Indian Ocean to offer a grand synthesis of the scholarship of the past few decades, resulting in a two-volume project called The Cambridge History of the Indian Ocean. The conference will allow the editors—including Engseng Ho, Tansen Sen, and Isabel Hofmeyr—to hone their conceptualization of the volume as a whole and provide feedback to individual authors.
