*This talk (based on a pre-circulated paper) will examine the social and cultural foundations of the slave trade between the Bight of Benin and Brazil in the first half of the eighteenth century, focusing on imperial politics by the kingdom of Whydah and Dahomey towards Brazil, as well as the intense competition pitting Portuguese against other European merchants.*
