CONROE, TX – The Conroe Independent School District voted to approve names for four of their incoming and changing facilities Tuesday night.

After nearly two months of gathering public input and discussion regarding the naming of four facilities for Conroe ISD, the board made their final decisions on June 15th. Three of the facilities are new, a teacher training facility, a new Caney Creek Junior High, and a new Conroe feeder Elementary school. The fourth facility, the current Caney Creek Junior High is also receiving a name change as it transitions to an Intermediate school.

“Being on the school board, I think this is the hardest thing we do, you know vote on an almost $600 million budget, and we do that faster and easier sometimes. Although we have plenty of workshops about it,” said Board Secretary Ray Sanders. “As a son of an educator, it’s an honor to name any school after someone who has dedicated their life to such a great and honorable profession.”

In a unanimous decision, board members chose to name the Teacher Training Facility after Walter Jett. Taking the name back from the old Jett facility which was sold to the City of Conroe. Board members also agreed to give the Albert L. Moorhead namesake to the new Caney Creek Junior High while changing the current junior high’s name to Veterans Memorial in preparation of its shift to an Intermediate school.

Approved Names:

  • Walter Jett, Training facility
  • Albert L. Moorhead, New Caney Creek Junior High
  • Veterans Memorial, Current Caney Creek Junior High (soon to be Intermediate)
  • Annette Gordon Reed, New Elementary School

Superintendent Dr. Curtis Null was particularly grateful for the re-use of the Walter Jett name for the new Teacher Training facility, “I know it was a concern of the family that his legacy would be lost, and I know this will mean the world to them.”

Three names were nominated by Board Members for the new elementary school; Annette Gordon Reed, Barbara Cargill, and Janet K. Bartlett. After three votes, Annette Gordon Reed was selected.

“It’s tough. These are great names and there are great people out there who love this community,” said Board President Skeeter Hubbert. “There will be more schools and other buildings in the future.”
