DESCRIPTION:<p>	The Center for Middle Eastern Studies is pleased to present "Mecca: The Lived City",<em> </em>a symposium examining the ways in which the city of Mecca is imagined, remembered, represented, and visualized from the perspectives of history, literature, urban planning, and the visual arts.</p><p>	The symposium begins Thursday, May 2, at 5pm, with a keynote talk by <strong>Rosie Bsheer</strong>, Assistant Professor of History, Harvard University.</p><p>	The panels on day two (May 3), will run from 8:45 am - 5:00 pm, and will features the following talks:</p><ul>	<li>		<strong>Ali Almajnooni</strong> (SUNY Binghamton): The Meccan Alley: The Decline of Vernacular Architecture	</li>	<li>		<strong>Jawaher Al Sudairy</strong> (Dar Al-Uloum Initiative): Conceptions and Realities of Makkah's Urban Future	</li>	<li>		<strong>Hussam Dakkak</strong> (Studio Bound, London): Makkah's Belonging	</li>	<li>		<strong>Tyler Kynn</strong> (Yale University): Between Empire and Sacred Space: Mecca as a Global Space in the Early Modern World	</li>	<li>		<strong>Omer Shah</strong> (Columbia University): "Made in Makkah”: Smart Technology and Human Resources in the Holy City	</li>	<li>		<strong>Drew Wensley</strong> (Moriyama &amp; Teshima Planners, Toronto): Mecca: City of Offering/City of Need	</li></ul><p>	(See flyer below)</p>
