Past and Present of Southeast Asia: A Research Workshop at Harvard University
Talk title: From Bandung to Jakarta: Sino-Japanese Rapprochement and Links to South East Asia

ABSTRACT
Since secret meeting between Zhou Enlai and Takasaki Tatsunosuke at Bandung Conference in 1955, Japan and the PRC forged important connections in the two decades to follow while standing on opposite sides in the Cold War confrontation. The interactions between China and Japan - either cooperation or confrontation- were linked inextricably to their diplomacies in Southeast Asia. This study aims to change our understanding of the postwar history of China-Japan relations by examining and highlighting the significance of these links.
BIO
Born and raised in Nanjing, China, Bohao Wu began the Ph.D program in history in the fall of 2017 after graduating magna cum laude from Brown University, where his honors thesis on Japanese technocrats in wartime Manchuria won the Christian Yegen Thesis Prize. In addition to Chinese, Bohao also speaks Japanese, Korean, and Russian. His research interests cover diplomatic and economic connections in Asia during the Cold War. Currently, Bohao is working on the interactions between China and Japan, and their respective involvement in South East Asia from 1950s to 1970s.
