The Applied History Working Group is delighted to welcome the renowned Paul Kennedy, the J. Richardson Dilworth Professor of History at Yale University, for an open lecture and discussion of his new book Victory at Sea: Naval Power and the Transformation of the Global Order in World War II. In a panel discussion featuring Fredrik Logevall (Laurence D. Belfer Professor of International Affairs, Harvard Kennedy School) and Graham T. Allison (Douglas Dillon Professor of Government, Harvard Kennedy School), Kennedy will explore how the great navies of WWII turned the globe upside down between 1936 and 1946—and, as an applied historian, what lessons this decade offers for today’s world. Free copies of the beautifully illustrated Victory at Sea, featuring over 50 maritime paintings from the late Ian Marshall, will be available on a first come, first served basis for a limited number of attendees. The Applied History Project at Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center aims to illuminate current challenges and choices by analyzing historical precedents and analogues.
