McMahon</a> (PhD, Yale) is the Mary Brinsmead Wheelock Professor of History at Dartmouth College. He is the author of <em>Enemies of the Enlightenment: The French Counter-Enlightenment and the Making of Modernity</em> (Oxford, 2001), <em>Happiness: A History</em> (Atlantic Monthly Press, 2006), and <em>Divine Fury: A History of Genius</em> (Basic, 2013). Most recently, he is the editor of <em>History and Human Flourishing </em>(Oxford, 2022).</p>
