SUMMARY:Mass Historical Society: "Mourning Lincoln" | Martha Hodes
DESCRIPTION:
Wednesday, April 8 Doors open at 5:30

Martha Hodes (New York University)

$20 fee (no charge for MHS Fellows and Members)

The news of Abraham Lincoln's death on April 15, 1865, just days after Union victory, astounded the war weary nation. Massive crowds turned out for services and ceremonies, and countless expressions of grief were printed in newspapers and preached in sermons. Public responses to the assassination have been well chronicled, but Martha Hodes is the first to delve into personal and private responses—of northerners and southerners, Yankees and Confederates, African Americans and whites, soldiers and civilians, men and women, rich and poor, the well-known and the unknown.
