DESCRIPTION:<p>Chad Wellmon, Associate Professor of German Studies and faculty fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture at the University of Virginia, will discuss “Googling Before Google:  A Brief History of the Search”.</p><p> Drawing on histories of science, print, and the university, Wellmon’s 2015 <em>Organizing Enlightenment: Information Overload and the Invention of the Modern Research University</em> examined how the modern research university emerged as a response to the challenges posed by the eighteenth-century information revolution. His talk will explore the longer history of the idea of the “search” and discuss some of the ways in which the eighteenth century sought to organize knowledge.  </p>
