SUMMARY:CES: Economic Transformation in the Global Economy: A Comparison of Spain and Korea
DESCRIPTION:

The relationship between institutional change and national productive structures is a major focus of the political economy literature. However, the perspectives of late industrializing, peripheral economies are seldom considered. This project aims to articulate the view of peripheral economies through an analysis of Spain and Korea’s economic transformation since the mid-1980s. The contrast between Korea’s upgrading via the manufacturing industries that drove industrialization in the 1960s and 1970s, and Spain’s move away from manufacturing and into sophisticated service sectors serves as a platform to discuss diverse strategies for economic transformation, compare the role of institutional structures in shaping strategies choices, and evaluate the long-term effects of alternative paths.

Angela Garcia Calvo Visiting Scholar, CES

Sponsors: Visiting Scholars Seminar: New Research on Europe

Contact: Arthur Goldhammer, art.goldhammer@gmail.com
