SUMMARY:CES: tomorrow is Today's Uncertainty: Speculating on Futures in Early Modern Europe
DESCRIPTION:<div class="summary">Zabel will examine speculation as a theological and philosophical concept in the 16th-18th centuries and will investigate the gradual emergence of speculation as an economic and financial tool. By looking at the development of the modern concept of risk as a means of calculating and controlling economic uncertainty, she will explore cases of failed speculation in financial capitals, such as Amsterdam, Boston, London and Paris.</div><div class="speakers"><div class="speaker"><a href="https://ces.fas.harvard.edu/people/profile/czabel">Christine Zabel</a> <span class="affiliations">Visiting Scholar, CES</span></div></div><div class="sponsors"><span>Sponsors:</span> <a href="https://ces.fas.harvard.edu/studygroups/vs_seminar/">Visiting Scholars Seminar: New Research on Europe</a></div><div class="details"></div><div class="contact"><span>Contact:</span> Arthur Goldhammer, <a href="mailto:art.goldhammer@gmail.com">art.goldhammer@gmail.com</a></div>
