Elliot Francolla is a PhD student in the History Department. Her research interests center on the political culture of the medieval Mediterranean between the 9th and 13th centuries. With a primary focus on Byzantium, she studies dynamic geopolitical relationships, economic exchange, and cultural production across the empire’s borders and peripheries. She is interested in tracing these relationships through both text and material culture.

Before coming to Harvard, she received her BA in Ancient and Modern History from the University of Oxford, where she achieved the highest grade in her cohort. Her work at Oxford included an undergraduate thesis on the cultural and political attitudes towards punitive blinding in eleventh-century Byzantium.
