Eric studies the experience and ideology of government in late medieval Europe. His dissertation explores these themes through the lives of “petty officials”—bureaucrats who mediated between state institutions and those who utilized and were impacted by them—in fourteenth-century Lucca and Bologna. Eric is broadly interested in the forces that shaped cultures of power in the late medieval and early modern world; his research, while focused on secular officials, often intersects with histories of ritual and clerical culture.
