Hyeok Hweon Kang (HEAL)
Hyeok Hweon "H.H." Kang is a doctoral candidate in the History and East Asian Languages program. He specializes in the social history of military technology, particularly guns and gunpowder from the early modern period. His dissertation probes Korea's transition from the bow to the musket, and its interface with governance, commerce, and institutional reform in the late Chosŏn dynasty (1600-1910). His works can also be found on the Military Revolution Debate, where he contributed comparative studies of technological and tactical aptitude between militaries of Western Europe and East Asia. He is a native of South Korea with upbringing in China and Guatemala, and received his BA from Emory University in History and Ethnomusicology.
