Despite differences of timing and detail, since 1900 a grand pattern of ethnic (or ethno-sectarian) "simplification" has reshaped almost all societies from the Baltic through the Balkans to the Middle East and North Africa. How should we understand and explain this pervasive (and continuing) process and assess its implications?
