A joint SoHP/SCA lecture by Dominic Powlesland

Following a visit to what appeared to be the bleakest quarry in the North of England in 1977 an Archaeological Research Project developed from a small rescue excavation examining an early Anglo-Saxon cemetery being destroyed by quarrying. This project has combined at various times the largest excavation in Europe and the largest geophysical survey in the world, has been the setting for pioneering work in applied technology in archaeology, transformed and challenged established views of continuity, population and the human landscape and established new approaches to recording and knowledge communication.
