Professor Akira Iriye Passes Away

We are saddened to share that our distinguished colleague and former Department Chair (2002-2004), Professor Akira Iriye, passed away on January 27, 2026. Among his many achievements, Professor Iriye was the first historian from Asia to be the president of the American Historical Association. During his time at Harvard, beginning in 1988, he served as the Charles Warren Professor of American History, Director of the Edwin O Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies, and after retiring from teaching in 2005, continued as a Research Professor Emeritus until 2010.
