History concentrator Carissa Chen ’21 has been named a 2020 Rhodes Scholar. Asked about her time at Harvard, her senior thesis, and her plans for the future, she says “For my senior thesis, I am finding the lives of the descendants of Harvard enslaved people in the archives and weaving the generational tale into a longer narrative of the development of Roxbury and Cambridge. I'm so grateful to my thesis advisors, Professor Beckert and Professor Rothschild, for inspiring me in this process. The Harvard history department has been my academic home these past few years and I'm so thankful to all the professors who've taught me how to write about and learn history. At Oxford, I hope to study a MPhil in Economic and Social History and to spend time reveling in all the Shakespeare productions in England!”
