Dr. Hannah Shepherd received this year’s Gross Prize for her dissertation entitled “Cities into Empire: Fukuoka, Pusan, and Japan’s Imperial Urbanization, 1876-1953.” The Harold K. Gross Dissertation Prize is “awarded each year at Graduation to the Ph.D. recipient whose dissertation, in the opinion of a committee of Department [of History] members, gave greatest promise of a distinguished career of historical research.”
