In Memoriam: Professor Roy Parviz Mottahedeh

The History community mourns the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Professor Roy Parviz Mottahedeh ’60, Gurney Professor of Islamic History, Emeritus, on July 30, 2024. Professor Mottahedeh was a renowned scholar of Islamic history and a member of the History department faculty from 1986 until his retirement in 2016, after which he continued his scholarly work as a Research Professor. Throughout his long and distinguished career, Professor Mottahedeh generously shared his vast knowledge and provided guidance to countless fellow scholars through his groundbreaking books and articles. He was a beloved colleague, advisor, and teacher, and will be sorely missed. Tributes for Professor Mottahedeh may be found in the Harvard Crimson and at the Program in Islamic Law at HLS.
