Xiaorui Zhou

Xiaorui Zhou is a PhD Candidate at Harvard University. She is a historian of modern China. Her dissertation, “Chinese Women’s Mobilization, Displacement, and Experiences during the Second World War”, studies the (forgotten) wartime proliferation of women’s associations. These included women’s groups within political parties, relief organizations, women’s suffrage networks, magazines, song groups, and women’s colleges. Her research problematizes how individuals negotiated between the praxis of national salvation and their gendered, often embodied, aims. She is also interested in the history of education and overseas Chinese. Before coming to Harvard, she obtained her B.A. at Sciences Po Paris and the National University of Singapore, and her M.A. at the University of Oxford, where she was a Rhodes Scholar.
