A panel discussion with Shaughnessy Naughton (Founder, 314 Action) and Monica Linden, PhD
WHEN: Wednesday, December 6, 5:00pm -- 6:00pm, with a networking session afterward
WHERE: Cannon Room, Building C, Harvard Medical School
HOSTED BY: GSAS Science Policy Group
Ever wondered what it takes to run for public office? Interested in hitting the campaign trail yourself? Join the Harvard GSAS Science Policy Group and 314 Action for a riveting conversation with two scientists who have been on the ballot -- Shaughnessy Naughton and Dr. Monica Linden.
Shaughnessy Naughton is a chemist and entrepreneur. After graduating from Bryn Mawr College with a degree in chemistry, Shaughnessy spent four years developing drugs at Wyeth Laboratories before taking over her family's publishing business. In 2014 Shaughnessy ran for Congress in Pennsylvania’s 8th District. Though she didn't win, Shaughnessy drew on her experience and connections to start 314 Action, which helps scientists and STEM professionals navigate the process of running for office.
Dr. Monica Linden is a Senior Lecturer in Neuroscience at Brown University and a newly elected member of the School Committee in Franklin, MA. After obtaining her PhD in neuroscience from MIT, Monica taught college-level science using innovative techniques and technologies to instruct and assess her students and herself. Monica will bring her decade and a half of experience as a teacher and her data-driven mindset as a scientist to her new role as a school board member.
Shaughnessy and Monica will share their thoughts on how scientists can contribute to society by seeking public office, from local school boards and state legislatures to Congress and beyond! After some structured conversation we will open the floor to questions from the audience. There will also be plenty of time to mix and mingle at the networking session after the event.
Food and drinks will be served at the networking session starting at 6pm. We hope you can join us!
