Anna Caroline Vertelo entered the Ph.D. program in 2023 and studies urban maroon communities in Brazil and their (re-)writings of history. Carol is particularly interested in understanding how quilombola populations relate to themes such as belonging, recognition, and memory. Her project aims to explore the contemporary meanings of Quilombo and how they align or contrast with the experiences of historic communities. She sees these communities as ongoing, unfinished projects, and I propose an understanding of Quilombo as a concept whose meanings are constantly changing according to external and internal factors affecting the reality of these communities.

She holds an M.A. in History from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) and a B.A. in History from the State University of Minas Gerais (UEMG).
