Edan Larkin entered the Medieval History program in the Fall of 2023. The previous Spring, she graduated magna cum laude from Brown University with a degree in History and Classics. At Brown, her research mostly focused on the First Pandemic of Yersinia pestis from 541 until around 750 CE and the lived experiences of people who witnessed and responded to it on the Italian peninsula. She is interested in Ancient and Medieval microhistories, seeking to humanize people otherwise lost to history through an interdisciplinary approach that combines disciplines including History, Classics, Archaeology, and Epidemiology. At Harvard, she plans to continue these studies through the cultural lenses of plague saints, cult worship, literature and epistles, and community responses and the biological analyses of aDNA sequencing and paleopathology. She has excavated in Italy and hopes to continue pursuing archaeology there and elsewhere during her time here.
