Margaret Weeks began the Ph.D program in history in the fall of 2016. She is a 2011 magna cum laude graduate of Brown University, where her honors thesis on political organizing and government policy in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro won the Christian Yegen Thesis Prize. She worked as a dancer and choreographer in New York City for five years before starting her doctorate.

Her research interests include race, gender, social movements, and grassroots activism in modern and contemporary Latin America, particularly in urban Brazil. She is also interested in Cold War–era American foreign policy in the Latin American milieu and resistance under twentieth-century dictatorships.
