Hello! I’m Sophia, a senior in Pforzheimer joint-concentrating in History & Physics. I seem to be interested in just about everything and considered many departments, though I did start out with a love of history that I imagined would end up at the center of things one way or another. Many experiences with the discipline—from research and writing, to reading and discussing —have drawn me to it. Foremost, though, I love the way that studying history can combine analytical rigor with an empathetically human approach.

My interests center on East Asia, especially China, and Eastern Europe, especially Russia (having wisely chosen two regions where I didn’t speak the languages, I’m also learning Chinese and Russian). I tend to focus on intellectual, agrarian, and environmental topics. Enthusiastic about science-based & quantitative methods for studying history, I support research in that vein with the Initiative for the Science of the Human Past and as a research assistant in the History Department.

I love distance running, serve on the boards of the Concordium and Pops Orchestra (where I also play trumpet), volunteer-tutor with elementary-school students, and always look forward to hanging out with my two geriatric cats and lizard. I’m more than happy to talk about any of this or anything else, so please reach out!
