Past and Future European Knowledge in Indian Tongues: Translating Political Economy in Colonial Delhi, c. 1840
Osama Siddiqui, Assistant Professor, History and Classics Department, Providence College
Gili Kliger, Ph.D. Student in History & Teaching Fellow in Social Studies, Harvard University ; Graduate Student Affiliate & Seminar Co-chair, Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies, Harvard University
This seminar examines early efforts to translate European economic ideas into Indian languages. Focusing on colonial Delhi in the 1830s and 1840s, Osama Siddiqui shows that debates over how to translate scientific concepts into the Urdu language shaped the reception of European economic thought and, ultimately, enabled the formation of a new vernacular science of economic and social life in India.
